Software as a Service (SaaS)

Software as a Service (SaaS) also known as “On-Demand Applications"  represents a web-based business model where applications are hosted and managed by  the software vendor, partner or third-party service provider for customer use.  Costs to use the applications are an on-going expense often charged for on per use or per user basis vs. traditional forms of software licensing. Small and Mid-sized companies are increasingly embracing this delivery model due to its attractive licensing, low up front costs, reliability and other factors. The evolution toward SaaS is presenting new opportunities  as well as enormous challenges to most software and service providers. Challenges include:

  • How to achieve scaleabiltiy across the entire business model including sales, implementation and Support.
  • How to orchestrate and participate in a complex ecosystem of complementary and sometimes competing partners.
  • How to effectively price their services for each target market
  • How to manage the transition away from their traditional business model

At the same time, the opportunities are substantial, with over 30% of customer workloads expected to be deployed though a SaaS model in the next 5 years. 

By applying economies of scale to the operation of applications, a service provider can offer better, cheaper, more reliable applications than companies can deploy themselves - particulary in smaller enterprises or departments.
